It’s a hot and steamy summer in New York. You could fry an egg on the sidewalk and melt your brains on the subway platform. There’s a crime wave involving blood banks, a philosophical parrot and all too many super-friendly dog-people in Tompkins Square Park. Willie is hanging on to what’s left of her equilibrium until she realizes that the man living next door is a vampire.
Written in journal entries, emails and voice mail messages — the contemporary versions of the dairies and letters that told the original Dracula story — Bram Stoker’s Summer Sublet is a visit to the comic corner of the dark side.
Bram Stoker’s Summer Sublet is the second in the Candy’s Monsters ebook series of novellas inspired by the classics of horror.
Bram Stoker Summer Sublet Candy Monsters Book 2 edition by Candy Korman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Author Candy Korman weaves a fun but noir tale of a pet sitter who is like an adult version of Harriet the Spy as she observes a neighbor whose mortality is suspect. Is he a vampire? And if so, what is she going to do about it? The wanna-be Buffy heroine is in near-stasis between a heartbreak and beginning law school. Her time as a pet sitter with a scruffy dog and an ancient talking bird is rich with the flavor of New York City baking in the sun in an oven-hot summer. Most of what she knows and believes in life is based on her living vicariously through classic books. I loved the literary references to other books as the heroine bases her reasoning and knowledge of vampires and other topics on what she has read in books, more than by what she has experienced in life. She has few friends, except in books. But for being alone with two pets, the story never sagged and the backdrop of familiar places in New York--such as the Strand bookstore--lent such an authenticity to the setting that I was transported there. One of the ways that you know you are reading a great book is that you FORGET you are reading a book. I was sorry to see the book end. It was very good and now, I am inspired to buy all of Candy Korman's work and savor the stories like little vacations. No spoilers here, but the twist ending made me laugh out loud in surprise. Highly recommended for literary types who like bookish heroines. Fun escape from the real world. Great writing.Product details

Bram Stoker Summer Sublet Candy Monsters Book 2 edition by Candy Korman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I sat down to read Bram Stoker's Summer Sublet like I do most books--well, I was lying down in bed, expecting to read a few pages before falling asleep with the lights on. Not a great habit, I know. Anyway, "Summer Sublet" forced a change in habit. It grabbed me from the first page with 1) clever twists on the Dracula story and 2) a voice not normally associated with Dracula--a savvy Manhattanite. This led me to read many pages in one sitting, er, "lie-ing downing"? Whatever, I really got into it and wanted, no, NEEDED to find out whether Willie's neighbor was/is a vampire. The flow of the story was fast-paced yet believable and I found the overall read to be time (very) well spent. I encourage you to buy and read Bram Stoker's Summer Sublet!
Beyond a doubt, Candy Korman loves the city she lives and writes in. The sense of place in this novella take center stage and draws the reader through from beginning to end. NYC provides the perfect backdrop for the protagonist's over-active imagination as she dog-sits for a friend after calling her wedding off. Korman's imagination knows no bounds, and the way she finds inspiration in Stoker's material shows just how great the author's imagination is. The pace wavered for me at times as the narrator processes the impact of her breakup while watching a lot of daytime TV, but overall this is an example of masterful storytelling. I'll soon be reading yet another of the author's monstrous tales.
Ms. Korman's take on the vampire myth is an offbeat, funny, romp through a single girl's fantasies while recovering from a breakup. The heroine has just found out that her boyfriend of a year has been cheating, she's moved into a summer sublet and suspects a vampire is living across the hall. She's taking care of a talking parrot who breaks into unidentifiable philosophical soliloquies and an elderly dog who needs to be walked three times a day. She lives on the Lower East Side of New York which gives the author an opportunity for a guided tour of the City while her heroine is walking the dog whose breed keeps changing, and stalking said vampire while he frequents tango dance halls. Korman has a light and breezy style that I found charming. For a while I wondered why her heroine felt the need to stake the vampire, but then I realized that a bad breakup can do that to you. I read this book in one gulp and enjoyed every minute, including the surprise ending.

Interview with a Jewish Vampire
Bram Stoker's Summer Sublet is simply delightful, the perfect summer read. Willie, the narrator, is cocooning in a sublet for a month with an adorable dog and a cockatiel that spouts philosophy as she nurses a broken heart and a huge knock to her self-esteem. Feeling isolated and gifted with an active imagination that is stoked from reading one of Bram Stoker's more obscure works and a treatise on vampires in New York, she convinces herself that her neighbor really is one. All the evidence is there, and she decides it is up to her to rid New York of this menace. I have never been to New York City, and I think the chances of ever going are pretty slim, but after reading the novel, I feel I have indeed traveled there. The city is really the costar, and Korman paints it with love describing cafes with food and drink to die for, museum jaunts, and tango lessons. Korman's style is breezy and intelligent; the book is one of the wittiest I have read in a long time. The only criticism, a small one, is that it ended too quickly. A more leisurely wrap up of the surprise at the end would have been more satisfying. If you're looking for a weekend literary get-away, I highly recommend this book!
We all know what the world looks like when viewed through 'rose-coloured spectacles' but what would it look like to a woman betrayed by the man she is about to marry?
In 'Bram Stoker's Summer Sublet', Willie is that woman betrayed and her life begins to look very dark indeed as she retreats from family and friends into a world where all the clues are pointing to the existence of vampires in modern day New York. Is Willie right? Is there a dangerous vampire living in the apartment next door or is she just losing her grip on reality? And if she is right, what should she do about it?
Those questions will keep you reading this psychological thriller-cum-literary monster story way past the witching hour. But be warned, you will keep thinking about it for far longer than that because this story is as much about what it means to be human as it is about monsters. One day this book will be a classic on a par with The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James. Simply brilliant.
